The Met Got Punked

Last week New York hosted one of fashion’s most prominent evening’s; the Met Gala. The Met Gala or the Metropolitan Museum of Arts yearly Costume Institute Exhibit as it’s fondly known, is one of those events where PR guru’s gather their little A-list protégées & file them out of the steps of the Met museum with the hope that they may get a mention on the infamous page six the next day. Publicity is publicity & whether the star is shining for being worst or best dressed who cares as long as Suzy Menkes uttered their name.

This kind of saddens me as I’m sure it must sadden Menkes too, judging by the ‘circus’ comments’ about fashion week she made. The allusiveness of fashion has disappeared. The devil that is social media has gotten it’s claws firmly gripped & refuses to let go. (And yea I am well aware I’m writing a blog!). The now sheer accessibility of fashion has made the celebrity an integral part & so lends itself to us ‘fashion obsessives’ becoming almost celeb hunters just to see what is on trend.

And so we reach the steps of the Met watching so many drab, personality-less, hickey, have no more of an idea of what is fashionable than some old dear on Emmerdale, celebs, enter one of the most fashion coveted events of the year.

This year could not have spelt it out any clearer on how Hollywood has no idea what is style, what trends are & how to wear them. The theme was Punk. I can only envisage how the meeting went to decide this. The notorious laugh of Dr Evil could definitely be heard.’ MWAAAHAAA they think they know fashion…Ha…let’s watch their fall from fashion grace!’; this was definitely uttered at some stage.

So very, very few got it right on the night. Of course SJP hit the nail on the head. Why? Because this is one Hollywood A-lister that knows fashion, that loves, eats, breaths fashion. Not fashion for fashion sake but fashion for what fashion is; fantastical & her Giles Deacon gown & elaborate Mohawk said it all. The Material girl, Madonna was also on cue with her fish net tights & risky tartan get-up by Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy. Another favourite of mine was the girl who can do no wrong at the moment, Cara Delevingne. She wore a studded embellished black gown with a plunging neck-line by Burberry. My last favourite & well this girl just keeps catching my eye lately & there will be a future post about her, it is Miley Cyrus. Yes you are reading right but she punked it with her Marc Jacobs fish-net dress & spiked hair!

Oh & the worst dressed by far was Kim K…sorry but what was that!???
