Ah September, autumn leaves, school runs and shorter evenings. September has almost the same feeling as January, it’s like the start of a new year, a new season. It’s time to put away the summer fancies and look to a whole new season of scrumptious clothes! Last week, Dublin’s oldest department store showcased to a lucky few celebs and hangers-on (me!), their new Autumn/Winter Collection. The runway was an array of cosy camel coats, funky tights and winter knits, everything you need to keep yourself not only warm but right on trend too. As was the theme showcased by the designers back in February, Arnotts were in keeping with the concept of timeless classics.
This season there’s a strong emphasis on wool handles of all types – luxe cashmere, double-faced wools, lofty brushed finishes and tweed. Rugged shearling, fleeces, faux fur are contrasted with the sheen of satin, leather and wet-look patent are key. Outerwear makes one of the strongest statements; military coats, cocooning capes, leather jackets. Silhouettes are outlined with retro colour influences, from the late 50s, early 60s and the 70s, which all define the season ahead.
The 70’s are definitely having their day too. With a nod to Ali MacGraw in Love Story and Diane Keaton in Annie Hall, high-waisted flared trousers with pussy-bow long sleeved chiffon shirts being a must have. And yes camel is the colour of the season and has to be embraced. It may be all grown up but it’s here to stay. Camel is a perfect colour for the office, so not only will you look the part but you also stay in style.
So the message from the Arnotts Catwalk, wrap up and keep warm in retro style chic.
